Rosaline and Stephen Brennan, Kingscote Tourist Park

After semi-retiring, Ros and Stephen Brennan found themselves in a twist of fate during a visit to Kangaroo Island. They discovered the caravan park where they were staying was for sale.

After researching the opportunity overnight, they made the life-changing decision to purchase the business the very next day; becoming the proud owners and operators of Kingscote Tourist Park and Family Units.

Their early days as business owners presented significant challenges. The park required substantial investment with ageing infrastructure and outdated facilities. The Brennan’s also recognised the importance of rebuilding the park's reputation. Another factor that weighed heavily on Ros and Stephen was the park's environmental impact and they became deeply invested in minimising this to support in preserving the island.

Having no experience owning or operating a caravan park, the couple found themselves overworked and nearing burnout, until Ros discovered the Office of Small and Family Business and its programs including the Sustainability Support Program, delivered by 2XE.

Giving Ros and Stephen valuable insights into sustainable business practices, one of the most notable outcomes from the program was an energy audit of the park, which provided practical recommendations, helping them prioritise improvements that would have the greatest impact.

“We would’ve never considered an energy audit prior to the Sustainability Support Program - it has been so valuable to our business.”

As a result of the audit, they invested in eco-friendly air conditioning units, upgraded commercial laundry equipment and began planning for future sustainability initiatives, including solar panel installation and improved waste management systems.

The Sustainability Support Program also provided Ros and Stephen with a place to connect with other Kangaroo Island small business owners, playing a significant role in the park's success.

Through workshops and networking events, the Brennan’s formed valuable relationships with fellow business owners and began actively promoting local tourism operators within the park. Establishing these relationships helped strengthen community connections while also enabling recommendations to park visitors and enhance their guest experience.

"The connections you make with other small business owners can be just as valuable as the knowledge you gain—they remind you that you're not in it alone."

Ros and Stephen strongly encourage other small business owners to take advantage of mentoring, workshops and networking opportunities such as the Sustainability Support Program. By investing in their own development the couple successfully transformed an ageing caravan park into a community-focused, sustainable tourism business.
