Jacob Barter is the proud founder of Noori on the Midcoast, a small wine bar nestled in the heart of Port Noarlunga. Noori is more than just a wine bar, it also offers carefully crafted cocktails and locally sourced dishes, an ideal place for locals to enjoy. Having grown up just 100 metres away, Jacob was dedicated to bringing a hospitality venue to his hometown that is approachable, authentic and sustainable.
Having started his professional life as a roof plumber followed by studying Architecture, Jacob’s journey to hospitality and business owner was anything but conventional. It was during his studies that he discovered his passion for bartending and over the next 5 years would refine his craft, taking him around Australia and the world.
Jacob wanted to create a space that combined elevated hospitality with the warmth and inclusivity a local neighbourhood bar offers. Having navigated the complexities of starting and running a small business - from staying relevant to managing operational pressures - he quickly learnt the value of balance, and embraced the idea that success doesn’t always have to be big wins but rather consistent, steady effort.
From reusing lemon and lime peels to make “super juice” to transforming mint stalks into cordials, sustainability has always been a core focus for Noori. With this mindset, Jacob applied for the Energy Efficiency Grant Program – part of the Economic Recovery Fund, after hearing about the program through a friend.
Once successful, Jacob used the grant to upgrade the kitchen equipment to be more energy efficient, installing a cool room as well as installing solar panels. Not only have these upgrades reduced the bar’s environmental footprint but has eased the financial strain of high energy costs.
Jacob recommends small business owners take advantage of the resources at your disposal as continual growth is so important. Programs such as the Energy Efficiency Grant allow business owners to not only make sustainable changes but also learn and connect with like-minded businesses.
“Advice I'd have for anyone looking to take part in any program or grant would be, be prepared and do your research. Don't be scared to ask for advice or information and be prepared for feedback”.
The Energy Efficiency Grant Program has allowed Jacob to spend more time doing the things he loves, outside of Noori, including travelling and visiting other venues around South Australia. He has also learnt to tap into the knowledge and skills of his staff and delegate roles to allow more time for himself.
