In May 2019, Mel and Shane Spehr purchased Aluminium Plus, a locally owned made-to-measure aluminium window and door manufacturer.
Just months before the onset of COVID-19, the couple were thrown into the deep end. Through resilience and determination, they successfully navigated the unprecedented times of the pandemic and went on to build a thriving business.
A key turning point in their success was their involvement in the Small Business Fundamentals Program. Having worked in the industry, Shane brought experience in manufacturing and sales. Meanwhile, Mel left her job as a primary school teacher and described entering the industry as “learning another language”. Combining their skills, they quickly recognised gaps in their knowledge of running a successful business, so they enrolled in the Program.
"The biggest turning point for our business came when we recognised what we didn't know and actively sought mentoring and support to fill those gaps."
Developing skills in financial management, strategic planning and digital marketing through one-on-one mentoring, Mel learnt how to interpret financial reports, create annual budgets and implement proper invoicing processes. What had once been foreign became their greatest strengths, enabling the business to make informed decisions and build long-term sustainability.
"Understanding the numbers transformed the way we run our business. What once felt overwhelming became one of our most valuable decision-making tools."

Through the Program, Mel and Shane also learnt the importance of building an online presence to attract new clients, helping them gain the confidence and skills required to establish a website, social media platforms and Google advertising. These initiatives produced tangible results, including an increase in social media followers and an expanded customer base.
Mel and Shane encourage other small business owners to seek out mentoring, professional development and networking opportunities, like the Small Business Fundamentals Program, wherever they can.
"No matter what industry you're in, connecting with other business owners reminds you that you're not alone and many of us face the same challenges; we can learn from each other."
Through their willingness to seek support and invest in learning, Mel and Shane built a thriving, sustainable business. Programs like the Small Business Fundamentals Programs helped change their understanding and could help transform other businesses too.
