Jane Cursaro, Heart Through Art

Jane Cursaro is the founder and creative force behind Heart Through Art, a unique art therapy practice that helps people express and process personal feelings and emotions through creativity. Proudly South Australian based, Jane’s work is rooted in the belief that art can unlock emotions and insights that words alone often cannot reach.

After studying Art Therapy, Jane combines her professional expertise with her passion and love for creativity. Her approach supports a diverse range of clients - from children to older adults, and those experiencing anxiety, mental health challenges or living with diagnoses such as autism. Her sessions provide a safe, non-judgmental space where individuals can explore their feelings, identities and experiences through visual storytelling. Offering both one-on-one and group sessions in homes, community and outdoor spaces, Heart Through Art allows people to truly connect with their feelings and emotions.

Jane launched Heart Through Art immediately after graduating, driven by a desire to make art therapy more accessible and to give people a voice in their healing journey. Over time, her practice has grown from a part-time passion into a meaningful, full-time career. She now works around 25–30 hours per week, supporting clients and running art therapy groups that offer both emotional support and creative joy.

Despite the rewarding nature of her work, starting and sustaining a small business hasn’t come without its challenges. Jane openly shares her struggles with marketing, finance, and the administrative side of running a business—common hurdles for many creative entrepreneurs. To help bridge this gap, she actively seeks support through networking, learning from other small business owners, and attending programs like the Small Business Mental Health and Wellbeing workshops.

These workshops have been transformative for Jane. Not only have they provided her with practical tools and strategies for running a business, but they’ve also reminded her of the importance of community, connection, and self-care.

“My key takeaway for mental health and wellbeing as a small business owner is I'm not alone. We're not alone.”

The program helped her identify and work through roadblocks in her business and gave her the confidence to expand into new areas.

Jane is deeply committed to mental health - both her clients’ and her own. She maintains her wellbeing through nature walks, running, making art, and connecting with peers. Her dream is to one day open an art café - a welcoming, creative hub where people can make art, sip coffee, and share their stories in a relaxed, inclusive space.

Through Heart Through Art, Jane is creating more than just a business - she’s building a movement for healing, connection, and creative empowerment, one artwork at a time.
