Shaping the future of small business in South Australia

Outcomes from the statewide engagement survey

In 2024-25, the Office for Small and Family Business engaged with small businesses across South Australia to better understand your priorities, challenges and opportunities.

This included roundtables, one-on-one interviews and a statewide survey. The feedback helped us compare current experiences with what we heard in 2022.

What you told us

Your responses helped us understand the key challenges affecting businesses right now and where additional guidance or support was needed.

From your feedback, we heard:

  • Cash flow pressures and rising costs remain the biggest challenge for many businesses.
  • Workforce shortages persist, especially in attracting and retaining skilled staff.
  • Mental health and wellbeing are under strain as owners juggle multiple demands.
  • Regulatory complexity and red tape are major frustrations. Businesses report that navigating compliance across local, state, and federal levels is time-consuming and costly.
  • Interest in digital tools and artificial intelligence is increasing, with businesses seeking clearer guidance on data security and privacy.
  • Succession planning and leadership development are still emerging needs, though continuity planning has increased by 4% since 2022.

Thank you to everyone who participated. Your insights will help identify where support is most needed and ensure future programs and services are practical, targeted and easy to access.
