Energy Bill Relief: 2023-24

Help to pay your electricity bill is available for eligible small businesses

If you run a small business in SA, you could take advantage of up to $650 in relief on your 2023-24 electricity bills through a joint initiative of the South Australian and Commonwealth Governments.

What is the initiative?

The South Australian Government is partnering with the Commonwealth Government to provide relief of up to $650 on 2023-24 electricity bills for small businesses.

This initiative provides small businesses with relief on their electricity consumption in the form of either quarterly credits if billed through an energy retailer, or a once-off rebate if the business is within an embedded network.

The period for this relief is for bills from July 2023 to June 2024 and is separate to the recently announced energy bill rebate from the Australian Government for 2024-25 which will take effect from July 2024.

You can get the bill relief if:

  • You are a small business located in South Australia; and
  • You consume less than 160MWh of electricity per year; and
  • Your business is on a separately metered business tariff with your electricity retailer
  • Or, your business is in an embedded network and you had an active account with an operator on 1 January 2024 and you receive an itemised account for your energy usage

You won't be eligible if you run your small business using electricity from home, or if your annual electricity consumption is above 160MWh.

How to access the energy bill relief

Embedded network operators

If you operate an embedded network, you can now apply for energy bill relief on behalf of eligible small businesses on your network.

To apply for relief, you will need to complete the application form and return the form to your energy retailer.

Program guidelines for the energy bill relief for small businesses on an embedded network are available, along with frequently asked questions for further information on the operation of the scheme.

If a correction is required to any claims, embedded network operators are required to notify their retailer by submitting a variation form.

Still have questions?

Contact points

If you have questions relating to this initiative, you should contact your energy retailer in the first instance. They will be able to answer your specific questions about credits and reimbursements.

The Office for Small and Family Business will also be able to point you in the right direction for more information if you need.

Energy bill relief for 2024-25

As part of its 2024-25 Budget, the Australian Government announced that eligible small businesses will receive a rebate of $325 from the Australian Government on 2024-25 electricity bills.

This is different to the relief being provided in 2023-24 which is jointly funded by the South Australian and Commonwealth Government. More information will be available before July 2024.
