What’s happening in October for small and family businesses

There are loads of opportunities, events and reminders happening this October. Find out how your business can get involved below.

Cyber Security Awareness Month

Cyber Security Awareness Month highlights simple, practical steps businesses can take to stay safe online. This year’s theme is building a cyber safe culture and is a great reminder that building secure habits is part of everyday business life.

From installing updates and using strong passphrases, to switching on multi-factor authentication and backing up data, every action helps protect your business.

Indigenous Business Month

October is also Indigenous Business Month, a chance to celebrate and recognise the depth and talent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrepreneurs. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the strength and diversity of First Nations businesses and consider how we can collaborate and support each other.

In South Australia, the First Nations Business Showcase is a highlight event, providing an opportunity to learn more about the capacity and capability of this thriving sector and discover how First Nations businesses can provide goods and services to meet your supply needs.

World Mental Health Day & Mental Health Awareness

Mental Health Month is a national event celebrated every October, that aims to improve community awareness and understanding of mental health and wellbeing.

This year’s theme is 'Connecting When It Counts' and is a reminder that timely conversations and meaningful connections can make all the difference, whether during tough times or at life’s pivotal moments.

For small business owners, it’s an opportunity to check in with yourself and your team. You can explore our programs and resources via our Mental Health and Wellbeing page.

National Safe Work Month

Staying safe at work is everyone’s responsibility no matter the size of your business. National Safe Work Month is a reminder to pause and talk about how to keep your workplace healthy and safe, whether that’s physically or psychologically.

This October, you can download free resources, use conversation starters like a ‘SafeTea’ chat, and take a fresh look at your systems to make sure your team is safe, supported, and ready to do their best work. Learn more at safeworkaustralia.gov.au.
