Grants to assist South Australian small businesses impacted by algal bloom

This grant program provided up to $50,000 (over three payments) to eligible small businesses and not-for-profit organisations in the broader impacted marine industry whose revenue had been impacted by the algal bloom event.

Recipients could use their funding in any way that supports the continued viability of their business, including:

standing business costs, including utilities, salaries and rent
financial advice, marketing, or other business development activities
adjusting the business to be viable in the changed operating environment
retaining and supporting existing employees.

How it worked

Eligible small businesses could apply for an initial payment of $10,000 if they had experienced a 30 per cent or greater decline in business turnover over a three-month period between 1 April 2025 and 30 June 2026.

A second payment of $20,000 and a third payment of up to $20,000 may also have been available if businesses demonstrated a decline in turnover over additional separate three-month periods (a minimum of 3 months of impact per payment).

The third grant payment was capped at the value of the verified decline in turnover for the relevant impact period. This means, if they were eligible for a third payment, they could receive the amount that is verified as the decline in turnover for the relevant impact period up to a maximum of $20,000.

In total, eligible businesses received up to $50,000 in assistance.

Evidence required

To demonstrate that your business met the eligibility criteria, the application process required you to submit the following for the relevant periods:

a copy of lodged business activity statements (BAS). Where this is not available, copies of income statements/financials validated by a registered tax agent.
a copy of the business’ bank statement.
a Certificate of Currency for any business insurance policy, if applicable.

You may be required to provide additional or alternative evidence based on your unique business situation, or as requested by South Australian Government grant assessors as part of the application process.

If you applied for a second or third payment, you won’t need to resubmit proof of identity documents.
