Meet Jane Richards from Eight at the Gate Wines

Through their family business, co-manager Jane Richards and her sister run a successful family winery from Wrattonbully in South Australia.

With eight kids between them and the demands of running Eight at the Gate Wines, Jane realised they weren’t getting the opportunity to review their business strategically.

“Running a business whilst raising a family is hard. With so many balls in the air, I knew I was not getting the opportunity to step back and look at our business through a strategic lens,” she said.

“The age-old adage of doing what was urgent, not what was important was a concern that I had. I was looking for ideas on how to better leverage our scarce resources to ensure we were truly adding value and profit to our business, and I was specifically interested in talking with somebody who was not in the wine industry.”

Jane approached the Women in Business Foundations Program for support around their marketing strategies and how they could leverage their resources to focus on activities that could add value and profit to our business.

“The mentoring has been a real highlight for me. I found our mentor’s perspective refreshing, bringing new ideas and insights that have been beneficial to our business. Running your own small business can sometimes be an isolated experience so having someone to talk through all the issues has been extremely valuable.

“Through the program, and with support from our mentor, I’ve learned to prioritise activities using the 80/20 principle, focusing on tasks that add the most value to our business. I’ve also explored new approaches to our wine communication, stepping away from what is tended to be the wine industry norm.

“My advice to other women considering the Women in Business Program is to go in with some clear thoughts about what you want to achieve and don't hold back. The more open and honest the dialogue, the more real the outcomes.

“Don’t underestimate the power of articulating your challenges to someone who knows very little about your business. It can really help crystallise things for you.”
