More single-use plastics to be banned in SA from September

From 1 September 2025, South Australia will introduce the next stage of its single-use plastics ban. Two products will be added to the list of prohibited items:

These products will no longer be allowed to be sold, supplied or distributed in South Australia.

Check the guide on Replace the Waste to learn more about the ban.

Top tips to prepare for the bans

If your business currently provides these items, you will need to move to approved alternatives before the ban begins.

We share some tips to help you prepare for this next phase and avoid disruption in your business.

Stop ordering products on the banned list and run down existing stock before 1 September 2025.

Read the guides and develop a plan for serving reusable options.

If you have excess stock products, speak with your supplier. There may be options to sell or supply excess stock to interstate customers or to repurpose it for other uses.

If you have large or commercial quantities of stock (excluding EPS), contact YCA Recycling.

When ordering replacements, confirm with your supplier if the items meet the requirements under South Australian legislation requirements. Are the items food grade quality? Do they contain coatings or glues that affect their use?

View the full list of suggested questions at Replace the Waste or use the guidelines to help you choose the right products.

Train your team about the upcoming bans so they can explain the changes to customers should questions arise. Use signage or online updates to let customers know you have moved to sustainable alternatives.
