Self-care strategies to help your mental health and wellbeing

October is Mental Health Month – a national event celebrated every year to improve community awareness and understanding of mental health and wellbeing, and to check in on those we care for.

Taking care of your mental wellbeing is just as important as taking care of your physical health.

When we are overloaded or trying to juggle all the big ‘important’ things, often the small, seemingly insignificant things that are good for our wellbeing are the first to be dropped - such as sleep, quiet time, connecting with others, exercise, good food, and doing the things that make us feel good.

In the great juggling act of life, what have you let slip?

Strategies to boost your mental health

Ignite Wellbeing Co CEO, Bel Ryan, shares simple actions that small business owners can adopt this month to boost your mental health:

  • Connect with your team by asking about their interests and having conversations that are about them as humans, for example banter over football or asking colleagues about what they’re watching on Netflix.
  • Incorporate wellbeing tools into everyday work – take your next phone call outside in the sunshine, have a walking meeting, or stretch while on a webinar.
  • Do something that helps youand put the rest of the world on hold for a while, whether it’s reading, going for a run, watching movies, play or listen to music or practicing mindfulness.
  • Ensure that you have a break for lunch and transition from your workday, and incorporate ‘work free’ time into your day.
  • Find some space to disconnect from technology(and work), whether it be in nature, taking a bath, or doing a puzzle.
  • Connect with people that energise you, make you laugh and that make you feel good.
  • Practice doing something imperfectly, try new hobbies and activities.
