Protecting your business this Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month and this year’s theme ‘cyber security is everyone’s business’ encourages all businesses and individuals to prioritise cyber security.

Cybercrime can be costly for businesses, both financially and reputationally, but there are simple actions you can take to make you more secure online, including enabling multi-factor authentication, installing software updates when available, using strong and unique passphrases, and recognising and reporting phishing.

Support on offer to SA small businesses

Learn about the programs and resources on offer to improve the cyber security of your business and cyber practices of your staff:

Cyber Uplift Step Program

Boost your cyber capability and secure your data with the Cyber Uplift Program.

This program, part of the suite of initiatives developed under South Australia’s Small Business Strategy, is a partnership between the SA Government and the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre. Small businesses can access a comprehensive 12-month program, with access to resources and expertise to build your resilience and cyber capability and withstand the challenges of the digital world through:

  • One-on-one consultations with a cyber coach
  • Personalised roadmap
  • Online training and tools
  • Workshops and networking events.

To learn more and register for CUSP, visit the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre's website.

Exercise in a Box

The Australian Cyber Security Centre has developed Exercise in a Box – a free online exercise tool to help you test your business’ response to a cyber incident.

The toolkit works by taking your key staff through a series of structured questions and exercises relating to an area of cybersecurity and outlines the risks your business is currently exposed to.

At the end of each exercise, you will receive a report offering practical guidance in improving the cybersecurity of your business.

Cyber Wardens program

The Federal Government's Cyber Wardens program provides small business owners and employees with free, easy-to-use online training to identify cyber safety practices you can implement in your business.

You don’t have to be tech-savvy or an IT wizard to become a cyber warden. Just like workplace health and safety officers help to keep small business safe from physical hazards, Cyber Wardens will use the same skills to prevent and protect against digital threats.

Learn more about the course program here.

Translated materials

The Australian Cyber Security Centre has developed easy-to-follow cyber security information and resources to support people from non-English speaking backgrounds to be more cyber secure.

You can find the information in your language here.

South Australia Police

Visit SA Police for resources on how to identify common scams and cybercrimes, where to report and seek help if you are impacted by a cybercrime. Videos, information sheets and printable resources are available on how to protect yourself from scams.
