Rediscovering your ‘why?’ in your small business

Navigating the realities of running a business, carrying the mental – and physical – load, managing staff, and the constant need to meet and respond to challenges can take their toll on even the most passionate business owner.

Ignite Wellbeing Co. Director, Bel Ryan, says that with the constant demands of daily operations, we may often lose sight of why we started our businesses in the first place.

“Many people I’ve spoken to over the past few weeks are saying they’re starting the year feeling that they’ve lost sight of their purpose.

“Our mental health and wellbeing mastermind sessions, delivered in partnership with the Office for Small and Family Business, can help you rediscover your purpose and set you up for the year ahead.”

Feeling overwhelmed in your business?

If you’ve lost your mojo, fallen out of love with your business, or have realised something has to change, here are three questions you can ask yourself to help when business feels overwhelming or difficult:

Why?

Write down or draw out all the reasons you started your business. There are often dozens of reasons people start a business (not just one single thing). Being reminded of why and what we wanted to bring the world, ourselves, our clients or family can be a powerful way of reigniting the spark.

Who?

Sometimes we wake up and discover we’re no longer working with the kinds of people that light us up. It could be your clients, your team, or even yourself (if you work alone you can get pretty sick of your own company at times!).

Think about who you’d like to surround yourself with, if you need more people to bounce ideas off, depend on, connect with, or have fun with. Who would energise you again?

What?

It’s not unusual for business owners to become consumed by their business, sidelining all the other things they enjoy = and that are good for their mental health.

When was the last time you immersed yourself in an activity you love, spent a day away from your laptop or phone, spent time in nature or with friends? How can you bring more of that back into your life?
