ERF Powering Up Savings

Applications are now open for grants to help you make your small business more energy efficient.

The Small Business Energy Efficiency Grants are available to small businesses and not-for-profit organisations to help you invest in new equipment to save on your future energy bills.

By committing to upgrading your equipment and reducing your carbon footprint, you’ll not only give back to the environment and help create a better future – you could also get back some of your investment through a combination of a grant and energy cost savings over the longer term.

Read the information below and calculate your potential savings before you apply.

Application guide

When you purchase equipment or solutions, such as upgrading your power supply and generation, lighting, energy efficient appliances, heating, cooling and refrigeration, you can apply for a grant from $2,500 up to $50,000 – a 50% reimbursement of your total outlay.

Application process

To support your application you’ll need the following:

  1. your ABN
  2. a Certificate of Currency for any business insurance policy
  3. copies of energy bills for the last 12 months
  4. a copy of lodged PAYG statements confirming grouped payroll of less than $1.5 million in 2023-24 if you’re on a separately metered business tariff or consume more than 160MWh of electricity per year
  5. a copy of your business’s bank statement showing the bank name and logo, account name, BSB and account number
  6. evidence of the expected reduced energy consumption of the proposed expenditure, using the energy savings calculator
  7. at least one quote from a third-party provider for the works to be undertaken, and/or at least one quote for each of the proposed goods to be purchased, for grant applications up to $15,000 (total spend up to $30,000)
  8. copies of a minimum of two quotes from third-party providers to confirm the works, and/or at least two quotes for each of the proposed goods to be purchased (including rationale for selecting a higher quote, if applicable), for grant applications between $15,001 and $50,000 (total spend up to $100,000).

As part of your application you will need to show evidence of the reduced energy consumption as a result of the proposed expenditure.

The easiest way to demonstrate the potential savings is through the Energy Efficiency Calculator.

Check your possible energy savings and include this in your application

Complete and submit an online application for purchase approval before purchasing the goods/services. The Office for Small and Family Business (OSFB) will verify that you have met the relevant criteria and issue a Grant Agreement and Acceptance Form, which you must accept within 14 calendar days.

How to use the calculator

  1. Input your first energy efficiency opportunity but do not click “Calculate” just yet, unless this is the only item you intend to purchase. (The minimum “total installed capital cost” needs to be $5,000 to generate a calculation).
  2. If purchasing more than one item, you can select the “Add another opportunity” and add the required information for each additional purchase.
  3. Ensure you add all the items you want to include in your grant application before you select “Calculate”.
  4. Select “Calculate” and you will be taken to a new page that includes a summary of savings per item and total savings for all items selected.
  5. Click “Print & Save” to save the completed calculation. This calculation needs to be included with your application.

All calculations are based on an electricity rate of 0.40 c/kWh, if you know your actual electricity rate you can change this value for increased accuracy.
