As our devices demand our attention more than ever, digital overload may cause us to feel tired, stressed and agitated.
Neuro-performance scientist Dr. Kristy Goodwin, author of “Dear Digital, We Need to Talk”, says for most small business, technology is unavoidable. However, rather than advocate for extreme measures like digital detoxes, Dr Goodwin has developed achievable digital habits in line with biological and psychological needs.
“We need to ensure our digital behaviours are in congruence, not conflict, with the ways our brains and bodies are designed to function," says Dr Goodwin.
Tips to help you tame your tech habits
The Office for Small and Family Business’ Mental Health and Wellbeing Program delivery partner, Mindarma, shares three simple tips that small business owners can use to reduce the many micro-stressors that technology brings into our daily lives:
1. Switch off notifications
Constant notifications and alerts force our brains to switch focus and multi-task, rather than doing just one thing. As well as increasing our stress, this makes our productivity plummet.
Switching off notifications and setting aside time to mono-task can create a healthier working environment.
2. Take regular screen breaks
Building regular screen breaks and setting boundaries for tech use during personal time can help you switch off and give your brain and body a chance to reset. Using blue light filters on your phones or computers can also prevent disruption to your body’s sleep cycle.
3. Stop scrolling, start strolling
Exercise and exposure to natural light can have a large impact on brain function. We know that exercise releases endorphins, which are natural chemicals that can help boost your mood, reduce stress levels and improve overall physical health. Engaging in your favourite activity, whether walking, swimming or cycling, should be considered in your regular routine.
